Maa Kalaratri: Navratri Day 7 Story, Puja Vidhi, Mantra and Bhoga

Maa Kalaratri: Navratri Day 7 Story, Puja Vidhi, Mantra and Bhoga

Saturday, 17th October 2026, is Saptami, the seventh day of Sharad Navratri, dedicated to Maa Kalaratri (also spelt Kaalratri). She is the fiercest of the nine forms of Goddess Durga, representing divine strength and courage. Her appearance may seem frightening, but she is a loving mother who protects her devotees from evil and negative energies. She is also known as Shubhankari, meaning "the one who brings good," as devotees believe she removes fear and brings peace and positivity into their lives. Worshipping Maa Kalaratri on this sacred day is believed to bring courage, protection and the strength to overcome life's challenges. Her blessings inspire devotees to face difficulties with faith and confidence.

Who is Maa Kalaratri?

Kala means dark or time, and ratri means night. Maa Kalaratri is the dark night that swallows ignorance and evil. Many traditions identify her as Maa Kali.

The Story of Maa Kalaratri

The demons Shumbha and Nishumbha, along with their generals, had taken control of the three worlds and spread fear among the people. Among their powerful warriors was Raktabija, who had received a boon that every drop of his blood falling to the earth would create another demon like him. Whenever the Goddess attacked him, thousands of new demons appeared, making the battle even more difficult.

To defeat him, the Goddess took the fierce and dark form of Kalaratri. She caught every drop of Raktabija's blood before it could touch the ground, preventing more demons from appearing. With her divine strength and determination, she finally destroyed Raktabija and brought an end to his terror. Her victory restored hope and peace, showing that divine power always protects the innocent from evil.

This story explains why Maa Kalaratri takes such a fearsome form. Although her appearance may seem frightening, her purpose is to protect her devotees and destroy evil. She reminds us that even the greatest challenges can be overcome with courage, faith and divine blessings.

Symbolism and Iconography

Maa Kalaratri is depicted in the following way:

  • Eyes: Three eyes, said to shine like lightning.

  • Vehicle: A donkey.

  • Arms: Four arms. She holds an iron hook or cleaver and a torch or thunderbolt, and her other two hands give blessing and protection (varada and abhaya mudras).

A Devotional Reflection: Crossing Over Fear

In the Bhagavad Gita (7.14), Lord Krishna describes His material energy:

दैवी ह्येषा गुणमयी मम माया दुरत्यया।

मामेव ये प्रपद्यन्ते मायामेतां तरन्ति ते॥

Daivi hy esha gunamayi mama maya duratyaya, mam eva ye prapadyante mayam etam taranti te.

"This divine energy of Mine, made of the three modes of nature, is difficult to overcome. But those who surrender to Me can easily cross beyond it."

Maa Kalaratri's fierce form is a reminder of how powerful this energy is. Fear of loss, of illness and of death is part of life in this world. The Gita's answer is shelter in the Lord, and devotees understand the Goddess herself as wanting her children to take that shelter. Day 7 is a good day to bring a specific fear to the Lord in prayer and to chant with full attention.

Maa Kalaratri's fierce form may seem frightening, yet she is Shubhankari, the one who brings good and removes fear. Her story shows that some dangers can only be ended by overwhelming force, and the Bhagavad Gita teaches that the surest way to cross beyond fear is to take shelter in the Lord. As you offer jaggery, chant her mantra and complete your Day 7 puja, bring one specific fear to the Lord while you pray, and chant with full attention.

May Maa Kalaratri bless you and your family with courage, protection and devotion. To find strength and shelter in a devotional community, join ISKCON Bhiwandi, where you can take part in kirtans, festivals and seva throughout the year.
