What is Snana Yatra?
Snana Yatra is the annual bathing festival of Lord Jagannath, celebrated along with His elder brother Lord Baladev and sister Subhadra Devi on the auspicious day of Jyeshtha Purnima. Also known as Snana Purnima, this sacred festival marks the appearance day of Lord Jagannath and is one of the most important celebrations leading up to Rath Yatra.
Who is Lord Jagannath? Why Does He Have a Unique Form?
Lord Jagannath Lord Krishna Himself, appearing in a unique form filled with ecstatic love. His large round eyes and distinctive form reflect His deep love for the devotees of Vrindavan.
Once in Dwaraka, Mother Rohini was narrating Krishna’s childhood pastimes in Vrindavan to the queens. As these intimate pastimes would awaken intense feelings of separation within Krishna and Balarama’s heart, Subhadra was asked to guard the entrance so that they would not hear mother Rohini and immediately leave for Vrindavan. However, as Rohini spoke, Subhadra became completely absorbed in the narration. The two brothers quietly arrived and listened without anyone noticing. Hearing about the pure love of the Vrajavasis, all three became overwhelmed with ecstatic emotions. Their eyes widened and Their limbs appeared to withdraw into Their bodies, forming Their unique appearance. At that moment, Narada Muni arrived and, overwhelmed with joy upon seeing this extraordinary form, prayed that it be revealed to the entire world. Thus, the Lord later appeared as Jagannath, Baladeva, and Subhadra.
Lord Jagannath is especially dear to His devotees because He reciprocates with them in a very personal way. He accepts simple offerings, rests when He becomes sick, and allows His devotees to lovingly care for Him just like a beloved member of the family.
The History of Snana Yatra
According to the Skanda Purana, King Indradyumna desired to see the Lord and was blessed with the manifestation of Lord Jagannath, Baladeva and Subhadra. On Their installation on Jyeshtha Purnima, the king organized a grand bathing ceremony for the Lord. This sacred celebration became known as Snana Yatra and continues to be observed every year with great devotion and enthusiasm.
What Happens on Snana Yatra?
On Snana Yatra, the Deities of Lord Jagannath, Baladev, and Subhadra are brought to the Snana Mandap and ceremonially bathed with 108 pots of sanctified water amidst prayers, kirtan, and great devotion. Thousands of devotees gather to witness this sacred Lord Jagannath bathing ceremony and receive the Lord's mercy.
What is Anavasara? What Happens After Snana Yatra?
After the grand bathing ceremony, Lord Jagannath, Baladeva, and Subhadra are believed to develop a transcendental fever and withdraw from public darshan for fifteen days. This period is known as Anavasara. On the sixteenth day, the Lord reappears before devotees in the festival of Nava Yauvana Darshana, after which the grand festival of Rath Yatra begins.
